Getting rid of carpet moths
The most common time of year to begin seeing moths emerge is in the spring. However, the moth season can continue throughout the summer. A “second wave” of moths may also occur in the late summer months. You will mostly see carpet moths from late-March to May.
Did you know that clothes moth larvae and carpet moth larvae eat clothes?
Everything in your wardrobe is a food source for them. Socks, designer clobber, dressing gowns… you name it. They chomp at clothes and carpets to build the strength needed to turn into fully grown adults. Once they have grown, they reproduce and then die.
But also, clothes and (the more rare) carpet moth both eat carpets too, so often what you are seeing, is clothes moths in your carpet.
Moths can spend months to a year of their lives as larvae. The larvae constantly eat away at clothes and carpets during this time. A single larva struggles to do much damage, but hundreds at a time can cause a serious problem quickly. Once they have fully grown into adults, they focus on reproducing. The lifespan of an adult is only a few weeks, so moths live the majority of their lives and do the most damage as larvae.
Natural carpet moth deterrents
A wonderful, natural deterrent is Lavender. It has been used as a powerful and pleasant tool to ward away moths for hundreds of years. Lavender oil is perfect to have in the home. The terpene compounds present in lavender act as a natural insecticide. The same properties are also present in rosemary.
The problem with carpet moths is that once you know they are there, they have likely already worked away at your carpet or clothes. It is best to get them dealt with in a quick and efficient way before they cause any further damage.
