Are you looking for wasp nest help? Springtime is the time of the year, where queen wasps begin building their nests and laying their eggs.
The building of each nest starts in the spring when the fertilised queen wasps emerge from hibernation and search for suitable sites to rear new colonies. The most common locations for these nests inside are roof spaces, airbricks and wall cavities. Outside, nests are often built in garden sheds, holes in trees, hedges and soil banks.
Queen wasps
It’s wise to keep an eye out for queen wasps during spring, to see where they build their nests.
Once the queen has laid her eggs in her new nest (around the size of a golf ball), she will feed the larvae that emerge but once they reach adulthood, they take over the enlarging of the nest and the feeding of all subsequent larvae that hatch. This usually occurs from late May to the end of June, which is the ideal time for pest control to consider treating the nest.
The queen wasp continues to lay eggs throughout the summer, until early autumn, so the nests will increase in size over this time. They can be up to 30cm or more in diameter by this point. If you can treat the nest earlier on in early summer, it is a much easier, less costly exercise.
Late summer wasps
What you tend to find in late summer, is that the ‘worker’ wasps become quite aggressive. At this time, the queen is no longer laying eggs, so the ‘worker’ wasps are looking for a source of sweet food to feed themselves. They often gorge on overripe fruit, and it is the ingesting of the often-fermenting juices that contribute greatly to the ‘worker’ wasps’ increasingly aggressive behaviour. This is when we tend to see wasps more often, they come into contact with humans more as they head inside, or near our homes, for warmth or food.
During the later part of the summer once the emerging fertile males and new young queens have mated, the males die and the now fertilised queens fly away to find somewhere to hibernate for the winter. This can be in lofts, sheds, garages or even overflow pipes etc.
Wasp nest treatment
As we have seen, the wasp lifecycle emerges from March / April until October. It is wise to keep an eye out for nesting queens from Easter-time onwards and then in early summer when the nests are easier to manage.
