It is now summer! Those lovely, soaring temperatures are most welcome as we emerge from of a relatively cool spring. Summer also brings with it hayfever, allergies and pesky pests… Wasp season is most definitely upon us.
Wasp season
By June, wasps are busy and their summer season is fully underway. This is the time that the wasps are most active and most visible outside their nests. The adult worker wasps are scouring the area for food and materials for their hives. Their main job is to bring food back to the larvae.
Some hives can grow to as large as 10,000 wasps. The usual places in which wasps nests are found are loft spaces, sheds or inside cavity walls. However, they really can nest anywhere, so don’t be surprised if you find one in an unusual place.
What are wasp nests made from?
Did you know that wasp nests are made from chewed wood and saliva? This forms a paper mâché material which is robust, lightweight and because of the original design, surprisingly waterproof.
Getting rid of a wasp nest can be challenging as a sting from a wasp (or multiple) can be extremely painful, especially if there is a chance that you may be allergic to a wasp sting. Wasp nest removal is therefore required when you notice any level of activity in and around your property. It is best we get to it as early as possible but we can manage wasps nests at any point in the wasps’ seasonal cycle.
