The nights are drawing in, memories of sweet summer warmth are gently fading. The darker mornings, evenings and cooler temperatures are bringing the cosy feeling of autumn. Excitement grows for Halloween, hot chocolates, even Christmas but with these changing seasons, come the emergence of pests, specifically rodents, in your home and garden.
Survival Mode
In the autumn, rodents such as rats and mice kick into survival mode, and are looking for ways to survive the winter.
To do that, they need a place that’s warm where they can also access a regular food supply. Warm homes are by far the best option. You may find mice and rats sneaking into homes, garden sheds or garages during the autumn, by whatever means necessary. They like to find secluded spots, close to a food source, where they can hide – unnoticed.
Finding the Cracks
Rodents can be very good at finding tiny cracks and gaps to sneak inside. They are able to smell food scents from far away, even through walls and insulation. What’s worse, is that they use their whiskers to feel for hot air escaping from homes. They can follow this back to its source and sneak through a gap. Where there is no gap, they can gnaw their way through vulnerable material to get in.
Mice and rat populations very much peak in the autumn, and they tend to peak as pests in the winter. The need for warm lodgings and delicious food drawing them closer to our everyday lives.
