As the frost of winter melts away, spring brings a buzz of activity, especially within the world of bees. These industrious insects emerge from their hives, where they’ve spent the colder months in a state of collective warmth, vibrating their wings to generate heat around their queen. With the arrival of spring, they venture out on their first foraging missions of the year, seeking the nectar and pollen that have been absent during the winter.
The ideal conditions for bees to take flight are warm and sunny days with minimal wind—a reminder of their delicate nature and dependence on the environment. As cold-blooded creatures, bees require external heat sources to regulate their body temperature, needing at least 50°F to become airborne.
Adverse weather conditions, such as rain or high winds, can significantly hinder their ability to forage, demonstrating the fragile balance they maintain with the elements.
Bees in the home
It is during this time that you may find bees seeking warm spaces around your home in which to make their new hive. This often appears as a swarm. In 2023, we handled a bee swarm cosying up to a Vaillant boiler in our client’s home. Hoping to make it their new hive, we managed to move the bees humanely, with the help of the Gloucestershire Beekeepers Association, to a new, safer home. We also managed to save our client’s boiler from any damage!
Swarming
When bees follow a queen and leave a hive, it’s all about survival and growth. In the overcrowded conditions of their original hive, resources become scarce, and the health of the colony could decline. During the spring months, this phenomenon happens and bees end up looking for new warm and cosy locations to build their next hive.
